One Achievement...and we are done....

"Continuous Improvement"......what is that ?? We Indians do not want to buy this phrase.
For us one achievement is enough to celebrate (or boast about) for a couple of years at least.

Everyone is entitled to celebrate an achievement for sure, but that does not mean we stop realizing our potentials to keep on achieving. Infact this is what differentiates a developed country and it's attitude from that of ours.

The Government or it's economic policies can only build shopping malls, places to enjoy and spend, new opportunities......but if we citizens of this country do not do our part "continuously" then this progress is hard to sustain...let us all start to believe that any achievement is not above and beyond our commitment but it is one of the many milestones of our work/business.

Realize our Potential

I have been following "America's Got Talent" for last 6 months. I recently got interested in it's Indian version.
America is called the land of opportunity. It promotes fresh talent and gives them the stature it deserves. But when I compared both shows I got upset with one fact. Anyone who is talented in USA but fails to impress judges can still go back and live a comfortable life. Whereas in India, if you impress judges only then your life changes...otherwise you are back to the struggle for bread.

There are some basic facilities that each Indian deserves. If not the government at least the well-to-do Indians can make sure that their fellow citizens have the basic amenities.

Mind you, the world is changing and if we Indians do not learn to respect each other then we will never be able to stand together in the hour of need...and I bet this hour of need will soon come.

Reactive NOT Proactive

We Indians are a Reactive Society. Had we been a Proactive society we would have made every corner of the country a comfortable place to live in.

Today I saw headline on news saying a 10 year child was beaten and burnt by her employer.
"Employer"...what is the 10 year old employed for?..yes you heard it right...she was a maid.
No one was proactive to report earlier that we have a case of child labour. Only when the innocent was tortured did we wake up. Try and experiencc the pain of burning your skin then think how a 10 year tolerated it. You would shiver.....

I remember the scene from movie Munnabhai MBBS part -1. Sunil dutt arrives at mumbai station and his wallet gets pick pocketed. The thief is caught and a mob starts to beat him.
Sunil Dutt states that this is our country. Everyone in the mob has a problem of his/her own, either at work or at home. They are all taking out the frustration on this poor thief.

This is the height of being Reactive. No one ever thought to stop someone from turning into a thief.

2 Mandatory changes India urgently needs

1. Teach the young generation....age 3 onwards...the meaning of discipline, rules, law, respect.
2. Make smaller cities in India self dependent. Each of these cities should have sufficient to stop it's citizens from migrating to metros.

I know this is asking too much...but give this a genuine try and we will succeed.

We know WHERE but don't know HOW....

Most of us want to have a job or a way of earning.....Most of us want to reduce the daily struggles (traffic, corruption, power, peace of mind etc) ....Most of us want to give happiness to our kids.....Most of us want India to be a superpower...
But the question is how to achieve all this.

It is the duty of government to do the HOW part. This is what most of us would argue.....but hold on, deep inside we know that every contribution will make a difference.

We Indians know what is right and what is wrong and we can very easily work to realize our dreams. This is where the true test of patriotism and courage begins. I am sorry to say that most of us fail here.
We Indians have come to believe that personal success can only be achieved by failing or harming somebody. Success earned this way is very short termed.

We tend to forget that there is always a "WIN-WIN" situation. This is what we need to look for.

IGNORE

....this is what we Indians do the best.

Recently I saw in the news, one of our ministers walking in parliament to present the budget.
As he got out of the car many media personnel on both sides of the stairs kept calling him for questions...No Response from the minister.....Not even a smile or a comment like " Pl wait couple of hours and you will know all".
It was a great example of "Ignore".
We walk on the street and see some animals creating a mess... Although we know what number to call to get these cleaned up...but we "Ignore".
We go to the office and see a part of the building or a facility urgently needing repair. So instead of reporting to the administration we choose to "Ignore".
One morning we read in the newspaper that a law is in place that smoking at public place is illegal. So when we see someone breaking the law, we "Ignore".

It is these small habits that even after the mumbai attacks of this magnitude, our preference was to "Ignore" and move ahead. I wonder how would we react if god forbid there was a bigger attack on our existence and dignity ???

We love to struggle and celebrate

I believe that there isn't a single person in India who is not facing AVOIDABLE struggle.

Why I call it an avoidable struggle?

- You walk on the road and you cannot take 5 steps straight. There are cars, people, animals and many other obstacles that you have to avoid. Walking just in front of a speeding car or getting through 10 inches of space between two people is very common.

- Reach your office and you see no discipline in the way cars are parked, guards are posted, elevators are loaded, food is served....and the list goes on

- Come back home and either the cable is not working or the water pipe is broken or the vegetable you bought was rotten or geyser is not heating up the water correctly......

We are so used to these issues that we tend to be proud if we have overcome these.
What we do not realise is that we have no time or orientation to think about bigger challenges and opportunities in life/career.
Just because we celebrate small wins that we can never dream of bigger achievements.

So, let us try to root out these small AVOIDABLE obstacles first.
The reason for all this is corruption and lack of desire to follow law.

In playschools today a very inspiring song is taught to kids.

"Cleanup Cleanup, everybody do your share"
